One of our InterviewFlo clients was in a leadership interview when something unexpected happened — after answering a question, the entire room went quiet.
No nods. No smiles. Just blank expressions.
The question was:
💬 “Tell us about a time you had to make an unpopular decision as a leader.”
She took a short pause and replied with calm confidence:
🗣️ “In my previous role, I had to restructure the PMO and reassign some key responsibilities. It wasn’t easy — few management team members initially disagreed with the change. But after open conversations and consistent communication, productivity actually increased within two months. Sometimes leadership means doing what’s right, not what’s easy.”
After finishing, there was silence. For a moment, they thought they might have said something wrong. But instead of panicking, they took a gentle breath, maintained eye contact, and said with composure,
🗣️ “I’ll take that as a moment to breathe.”
That simple remark eased the tension. The panel exchanged glances, and one interviewer said quietly, “We’re just processing your answer as it was really good.”
That experience became one of our favorite coaching stories because it perfectly demonstrates how calm confidence speaks louder than words.
