The “Tell Me About Yourself” Trap

You might feel tempted to tell the interviewer, “Haven’t you read my résumé?”
(Just kidding—don’t actually say that. Stay professional. 😉)

This classic opener sounds harmless… until you realize you’ve been talking for 12 minutes about your hobbies, your cousin’s wedding, and that time you won a woodworking contest.

Here’s the fix:

  • Keep it short (90 seconds max).

  • Mix past, present, future. Example:
“I’ve spent 5 years in IT project management. I’m currently leading security rollouts at Walmart. And I’m excited about opportunities where I can grow in strategy.”

  • Save the cat story for lunch.

Remember, they’re not hiring your pet—they’re hiring you.
