The Classic Curveball: “Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years?”
This question makes many candidates freeze. How can you possibly predict the future? The good news: you don’t need a crystal ball. Employers just want to see two things—ambition and alignment with the role.
Tips:
Don’t joke about winning the lottery or retiring on a beach.
Avoid being too vague (“I just want to be successful”).
Show a direction that naturally connects to the job at hand.
Example answer:
“In five years, I see myself leading larger cross-functional projects. This role excites me because it gives me the chance to build the leadership skills I’ll need to grow in that direction.”
They’re checking whether you’re aiming for growth—and whether that growth fits with them.
